Nine Inch Nails’ frontman Trent Reznor recently discussed the Nine Inch Noize collaboration and addressed his future plans with Nine Inch Nails in a statement shared on Rolling Stone.
The statement focused on the creative partnership between Nine Inch Nails and Boys Noize. It explained how their collaboration evolved from touring together to a full Coachella performance.
“The creative fulfillment of working on the ‘Challengers’ and ‘Tron’ scores with Boys Noize led me to think that including him in the ‘Peel It Back’ tour could be an interesting way to express NIN in more purely electronic terms live — a concept I’ve wanted to explore for some time,” Reznor said. “The result was so much fun for us we felt it was worth expanding and formalizing in some way.”
Reznor explained how the Coachella performance came about and clarified his touring plans.
“On a whim I mentioned it would be cool to play a whole set as Nine Inch Noize in the Sahara tent at Coachella,” he continued. “Careful what you wish for…the next thing I knew we were designing a whole new show to present in the way it deserved.”
“There’s no surprise tour announcement — this Saturday is it,” Reznor said. “I’m taking Sunday off and excited to be working on new Nine Inch Nails music Monday — I’ll see you when I come up for air.”
He also shared details about the recording process for their collaborative work.
“We recorded this album all over the place — some of it’s live, some in studios, hotels, planes, etc,” he said. “We had a lot of fun revisiting these songs and hope you enjoy. Listen LOUD.”
The collaboration between Reznor and Boys Noize has deeper roots than the recent Coachella announcement suggests. It builds on months of creative experimentation during Nine Inch Nails’ touring cycle.
Kerrang reported that this partnership built on months of joint appearances during NIN’s Peel It Back Tour. During these shows, Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Alex Ridha (Boys Noize) tested electronic NIN sets. The trio used these tour dates as a testing ground for their electronic reinterpretations of Nine Inch Nails material. They gradually developed the sound that would eventually become Nine Inch Noize.
The Coachella debut proved to be a significant moment for the collaboration. Kerrang noted that Nine Inch Noize debuted officially at Coachella’s Sahara Stage on April 11. They delivered an 11-song set with nine NIN tracks, one How To Destroy Angels song, and a Soft Cell “Memorabilia” cover. The performance featured a special guest appearance by Reznor’s wife, Mariqueen Maandig Reznor. This added another layer to the collaborative effort.
The timing of the project aligns with Reznor’s broader creative schedule. Kerrang confirmed that the group will play Coachella’s second weekend soon after and drop their self-titled debut album on April 17 via Interscope. This release strategy suggests that while the live performances may be limited, the collaboration will have a lasting impact through recorded material.
The statement confirms that Reznor will return to focusing on new Nine Inch Nails material following the Coachella performance. This marks the end of this experimental chapter and the beginning of a new creative phase for the industrial rock pioneer.
