Mastodon has unveiled their new temporary guitarist for their North American spring tour. The change was captured in recent fan-filmed footage from their performance at The Factory in Chesterfield, Missouri.
Mastodon initially brought in Ben Eller as a temporary replacement after Brent Hinds’ departure. The band has now introduced Nick Johnston as their new fill-in guitarist for the current North American tour run.
Johnston demonstrated his role during the band’s recent Missouri performance. He handled guitar duties and performed the second solo during their rendition of ‘Ember City.’
This temporary arrangement continues as Mastodon proceeds with their spring tour schedule across North America.
Johnston’s addition to Mastodon’s lineup represents a significant transition period for the band.
MXDWN Music reported that Hinds’ departure emerged as a mutual decision in March. This development prompted the band to search for a suitable temporary replacement.
Johnston’s extensive experience enhances his new role with Mastodon. Loudwire highlighted the Canadian virtuoso’s reputation in the heavy progressive music scene. He has collaborated with prominent acts including Intervals, Periphery, and Polyphia.
The guitarist’s musical portfolio features six solo albums that showcase his versatility. Industry sources noted his previous performances with notable progressive metal bands. His experience includes a 2019 tour with Between the Buried and Me and The Contortionist.
Johnston’s technical prowess and progressive metal background align well with Mastodon’s intricate musical style. His capability became evident through his handling of complex guitar parts during the band’s recent performances.
