Jefferson Airplane Icon Grace Slick’s Insecurity About Herself

Although the world recognizes them as famous, rich, and influential figures, many big names in the music scene struggle with insecurities. For instance, Oasis’ Liam Gallagher drinks half a bottle of brandy before a show to remain calm, and Amy Lee has to reassure herself it will be okay whenever she gets nervous on stage. Even the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne, suffers from terrible stage fright every time he has to perform.

Grace Slick has been making the headlines with her remarks on musicians who are of an older age. The 82-year-old musician argues that all rock stars over 50 should retire because they look stupid. Moreover, Slick has also stated that she couldn’t stand watching Fleetwood Mac perform for the same reason. Besides getting older, the Jefferson Airplane icon seems to have had another insecurity regarding her appearance.

Why Is Grace Slick Insecure About Her Appearance?

Grace Slick rose to prominence as part of San Francisco’s early psychedelic music scene in the mid-1960s. She became a famous female rock icon with her work with Jefferson Airplane and the band’s successors Jefferson Starship and Starship. In the 1980s, Slick was the only member from Jefferson Airplane’s lineup in Starship. After the release of ‘No Protection,’ she left the band in 1988. A year later, the musician and her former Jefferson Airplane bandmates decided to reunite. However, Grace Slick chose to retire after the reunion.

When she left the music scene, Grace was 49 years old, so it’s safe to say that she has stood behind her ‘All rock-and-rollers over the age of 50 should retire’ remark. When she was a young and beautiful woman in the ’60s, Grace Slick became a sex symbol. The musician had highly sensual and erotic photoshoots, such as the famous photoshoot where she was naked in a bathtub. However, it seems Slick didn’t believe she was a sex symbol at all.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Grace Slick said she didn’t believe she was a sexy woman. According to the musician, she thought Marianne Faithful was sexier as she had full lips, long blonde hair, and big breasts. Moreover, Grace also revealed her concerns about her liver spots. Jefferson Airplane icon described them as ‘ugly sh*t’s and added that she had strange lumps all over her body.

Slick told Rolling Stone the following:

“I thought I was dark and foreboding, kind of witchey, but I didn’t think of myself as sexy. I thought Marianne Faithfull was very sexy-looking at that time — big fat lips, long blonde hair, big boobs, and all that.”

She then continued, touching upon her liver marks:

“They seem to come up overnight. And I go, ‘What the f*ck is this ugly sh*t going on here?’ And these lumps in weird places start happening. It’s just bizarre.”

It could be said that Grace Slick has been quite insecure about how her body changes due to aging. However, it looks like the musician also didn’t consider herself sexy when she was younger, as she wasn’t perfect according to society’s beauty standards. Although Slick proposed that Marianne Faithfull was sexier than her, both she and Faithfull were two of the most beautiful female icons of the era.
