Mike Portnoy recently shared his excitement about reuniting with Dream Theater to perform “A Change of Seasons.” He also warned fans this might be their last chance to see it live, in a statement posted on Instagram.

The drummer reflected on the emotional significance of performing the epic track again after more than two decades apart from the band.

“Tonight we played A Change Of Seasons together for the first time (w me) in over 20 years…and it already felt 100% comfortable for me right upon the first play through,” Portnoy said. “Seems this one is just embedded in my being…especially as it’s one of the oldest DT songs in the entire catalog (the original version was written 36 years ago back in 1989…pre-dating all of the Images And Words songs).”

Portnoy expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to perform what he considers a career highlight once again.

“I have to say it’s really going to be very special getting to play this magnum opus again…years ago, I honestly wondered if I ever would…so to be able to play it together again for a whole new generation is going to be amazing and another bucket list item I hoped to check off,” he continued.

However, the drummer also issued a warning to fans hoping to experience the performance.

“I also can honestly say, it’s likely playing it on this tour cycle will be the last time we ever play it…so you should catch this while you can,” he added.

The reunion with this particular song carries deep historical significance for both Portnoy and Dream Theater. “A Change of Seasons” represents one of the band’s most ambitious and emotionally charged compositions.

“A Change of Seasons” stands as a pivotal piece in Dream Theater’s catalog. It showcases their progressive metal mastery through its intricate 23-minute structure. Musicology Blog reported that the track explores deep themes of time, loss, and introspection. It features complex arrangements that challenged the band’s creative partnership and solidified their reputation as musical artisans.

The song’s journey to release was unconventional. Wikipedia noted it was originally slated for the 1992 album Images and Words but was instead released as an EP in 1995. The EP included added live cover tracks from a fan club concert at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London. This decision allowed the band to give the epic composition the spotlight it deserved.

The personal nature of the track adds another layer to Portnoy’s emotional connection with the piece. Dream Theater’s official discography revealed that the lyrics were penned by Portnoy and inspired by the death of his mother. This makes each performance deeply meaningful for the drummer.

The A Change of Seasons EP also marked an important transitional moment in Dream Theater’s history. Dream Theater Fandom documented that it was the first release to feature keyboardist Derek Sherinian, signaling an evolution in the band’s lineup. Despite being labeled an EP, its length exceeds that of many full albums. This underscores the band’s ambitious scope for the project and their commitment to pushing musical boundaries.
