In a recent episode of the podcast 60 Songs That Explained the 90s, rock musician Courtney Love shared her memories of the late Kurt Cobain. This followed her tribute to the Nirvana frontman for the 28th anniversary of his death on Instagram a month before.

As part of her discussion, Love named Eric Erlandson, Pat Smear, and Roddy Bottum as key figures who supported Cobain during the intervention arranged for him and his last days. She spoke about the emotionally draining period that led to their separation and shared the anxiety that gripped her when the late singer unexpectedly left the rehab center.

Former Hole vocalist shared:

“Nobody knew where the f – k he was for five days. Charlie [Hunnam] does. Charlie’s thing is like – They don’t want you to know who they are; they’re mostly dead, and/or they’re back in their country of origin. Like, okay, whatever, right? But there was like five lost days, and I’m like freaking out.

I’m telling that I think he’s in town. So, Gibby [Haynes] is in Exodus with him, and Gibby says that he said, ‘Hop the fence.’ I called Exodus, and they said he was getting a lung X-ray. I’m like, ‘Yeah, no, that’s not true.’ And then I just start panicking. He’s called CLS, he’s called a car. I guess [Duff] McKagan was on the airplane home with him. They were sitting together. That happened. And then, he vanishes.”

Amidst a wave of public backlash directed towards her at the time, Love recalled her frantic attempts to find Cobain, which included making calls to hotels under fake names. She revealed her annoyance when a hotel failed to connect the late Nirvana member’s call to her. As the conversation shifted to his suicide, the singer presented a mournful perspective on her late husband’s suicide.

She said:

“It’s not a thing that – I don’t know, do we live there? Do we dwell here? You know, taking your life like that is such a massive thing. I saw something else to do with oneness and that we’re all interconnected. Love and forgiveness, and again, the hero died, and the fool survived, and here I am.”
