Journey singer Arnel Pineda appeared to hint at his exit from the band after Steve Perry lookalike and soundalike Hugo Valenti performed with the group during a recent show in Japan, according to a post shared on Instagram.
The post, shared by musician Adam Holland, featured a photo of Valenti performing with Journey. Holland praised his performance, suggesting Valenti may be starting a new chapter with the band. Pineda responded to the post with a comment that seemed to acknowledge a shift within the group.
Adam Holland wrote in the caption of his post: “Hugo Valenti, legend. Enough said! I am so proud of you my brother. Enjoy this ride. You deserve it all.”
Pineda commented on the post, seemingly reacting to the moment: “That’s the band right there..now I can step back..congratulations Journey.”
Valenti’s turn with Journey wasn’t a one-off. He first sang “Faithfully” alongside the band during their August 29 stop in Fukuoka. He returned two days later in Tokyo, where he performed both “Faithfully” and the 1981 deep cut “Keep On Runnin’.” Pineda still handled the bulk of Journey’s set on both nights, splitting vocal duties with other band members as the group has done throughout its current tour.
Valenti is far from a stranger to Journey’s orbit. He spent years fronting Voyage, one of the most prominent Journey tribute acts, building a reputation for closely channeling Steve Perry’s tone and stage presence. Valenti was passed over by Journey when the band was searching for a new lead singer back in 1998. His recent appearances onstage with the actual group feel like a full-circle moment for longtime fans.
Lineup changes are nothing new for Journey. Steve Perry originally fronted the band from 1977 to 1987. He briefly returned from 1995 to 1998 before departing for good. The band brought in Pineda in 2007. He has remained Journey’s lead singer ever since, helping revive the group’s popularity with a new generation of fans.
Given that history, any hint of another transition draws immediate attention from Journey’s fan base. Pineda’s comment, paired with Valenti’s back-to-back appearances in Japan, has only intensified speculation about what comes next for the band.
