Michael Sweet recently praised the performance of Howie Simon, who replaced Oz Fox during Stryper’s Latin American tour due to Fox’s health issues, in a statement shared on Facebook.
Sweet’s comments highlighted Simon’s flawless performance throughout the tour dates.
“This guy [Howie Simon] nailed every note, every night on our Latin American run,” Sweet said. “He never made mistakes (that I could hear), and he is a great guitar player/singer! Thank you, Howie.”
When one fan expressed doubt about Simon’s perfect performance, Sweet defended his assessment.
“Why do you doubt it? He did,” Sweet responded. “And since I was there on stage every night performing with him and listening to him I’m pretty sure I know what I’m talking about.”
The comments came following the completion of Stryper’s Latin American tour, where Simon successfully filled in for regular guitarist Oz Fox.
Simon’s involvement with Stryper represents a continuation of his extensive career in the rock and metal scene. NAMM’s Oral History revealed that the Los Angeles-based guitarist began playing at age six after being born in Buffalo, New York. He has built an impressive resume over the decades.
The guitarist has previously worked with notable acts including Jeff Scott Soto, Talisman, and Winger, as his official Instagram documented. His versatility extends beyond live performances, having contributed to various movie and television soundtracks throughout his career.
This wasn’t Simon’s first time stepping in for Fox with Stryper. Blabbermouth noted that he has filled in for the regular guitarist on previous tours. This makes him a familiar presence within the band’s touring setup.
Fox’s absence from the Latin American dates stems from his ongoing recovery following brain surgery performed in May 2024. Blabbermouth reported that doctors advised Fox to avoid extended touring during his recovery period. This necessitated Simon’s continued involvement with the band’s live performances.
