James Hetfield has revealed the connection between two of Metallica’s biggest hits. He explained how one song was deliberately crafted as a response to another, in comments shared with Loudwire.

The revelation came during a special syndicated program featuring Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and James Hetfield. The program celebrated the remastered deluxe edition box set of Metallica’s ‘Load’ album. During the conversation, Hetfield shared previously unknown details about the song ‘King Nothing.’

“‘King Nothing’ was kind of an answer to ‘Sandman’ really,” Hetfield said. “It was and obviously at the end of the song, there’s a little bit of a ‘off to never, neverland,’ a little nod towards it.”

The frontman explained the band’s creative process behind the 1996 track from their ‘Load’ album.

“I think we were trying to keep up with the fact that ‘Sandman’ was a great song and people connected with it,” he continued. “So it at least made sense to write a song in that tempo, in that vein, that pound.”

This revelation comes at a significant time for Metallica fans. The band continues to celebrate their extensive catalog through special releases and remastered editions.

The timing of Hetfield’s comments coincides with the release of the comprehensive ‘Load’ remastered deluxe box set. Metallica’s official store confirmed this deluxe edition includes previously unreleased material. It is available in various formats including 2LP, CD, and an extensive box set featuring live shows and demos.

The ‘Load’ album itself represents a pivotal moment in Metallica’s career. It contains several fan favorites beyond ‘King Nothing.’ Rhino Records reported the album features hits like “Until It Sleeps” and “Hero of the Day.” For the first time ever, it includes the original extended version of “The Outlaw Torn.”

The comprehensive nature of this reissue demonstrates the album’s lasting impact on the band’s legacy. Blabbermouth noted the deluxe box set contains 301 total tracks. This offers fans an unprecedented look into the band’s creative process during this era.

This insight into the deliberate connection between ‘King Nothing’ and ‘Enter Sandman’ provides fans with a deeper understanding of how Metallica approached songwriting following their breakthrough success. It reveals the strategic thinking behind their continued evolution as artists.
