Former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds has made harsh comments about his ex-bandmates following his departure from the band after 25 years. His comments reveal that his exit wasn’t as amicable as it may have appeared. The comments surfaced in response to a social media post shared on Mastodon’s Instagram.
The band recently posted about their album anniversary. Fans commented on the departure of their longtime guitarist.
“11 more trips ’round the sun since this was released!” Mastodon wrote in the caption of their post.
A fan’s response to the post mentioned missing Hinds. This prompted a direct and critical reply from the former guitarist.
“‘Halloween’ is definitely my #1 track on this record,” one fan commented. “Definitely gonna miss B. Hinds though.”
Hinds responded with a blunt statement about his former bandmates and his time with the group.
“I want [sic] miss being in a shit band with horrible humans,” the ex-Mastodon guitarist replied.
This response indicates that Hinds’ departure from Mastodon after a quarter-century with the band was far from peaceful. It contradicts any impression of an amicable split.
Hinds’ bitter comments stand in stark contrast to the official narrative surrounding his departure from the Atlanta-based metal band.
Loudwire reported that Mastodon described the split as a mutual decision and expressed pride and gratitude for their 25 years together. The band’s official statement emphasized their continued commitment to their music and upcoming touring plans. These plans will proceed without their founding guitarist.
The departure marks a significant moment in Mastodon’s history. Louder Sound noted that this represents the first lineup change in the band’s 25-year existence. Hinds had been with the group since its formation in 2000 and contributed to all eight of their studio albums. This makes his exit particularly notable for longtime fans.
Beyond his work with Mastodon, Wikipedia documented that Hinds has been involved in various side projects including surfabilly band Fiend Without a Face, West End Motel, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, and Legend of the Seagullmen. These diverse musical ventures showcase his range beyond Mastodon’s progressive metal sound.
Despite the public tensions revealed through his social media response, MetalSucks confirmed that the remaining members of Mastodon have stated they remain inspired and committed to moving forward with their planned activities for 2025. This suggests the band will continue without addressing the personal conflicts that led to the split.
