Shinedown frontman Brent Smith has addressed longstanding rumors that he is homeless. He clarified that he lives in hotels by choice, in a recent interview.

Smith explained that he sold his California home in 2016 and has since chosen a lifestyle that keeps him mobile, with roots in Florida due to his son and frequent time spent in Tennessee and South Carolina.

“It’s interesting, man. Growing up and then getting the life that I asked for to actually be a reality, I remember my parents, in the first few records and album cycles, my mom and my dad, they were still working, and there were a lot of people that said to my mom, they were, like, ‘It almost seems like he’s running from something,'” Smith said. “And my mom was, like, ‘No, he’s running towards everything.’ And she came up with that, and I think it kind of floored people. And there used to be this idea that I was homeless, and my mom was, like, ‘He’s not homeless. He’s home free.'”

Smith went on to explain the personal and professional reasons behind his unconventional living arrangement.

“I just look at why I choose to live the way that I do… My home is with my son, so I definitely have roots in Florida because of him. And I have roots in Tennessee. I’m in Nashville a lot. The last couple of years, I was in South Carolina with Eric [Bass, Shinedown producer and bassist] pretty much all the time,” he continued. “And again, when I had the house out in California in 2010 to 2016, I was doing a lot out in California. I was working on a lot of different things, obviously with the band, and it made sense. And then it just got to a point where I was, like, ‘I kind of did what I needed to do here. I need to move on.’ And for me, I’ve just never, ever had an issue being on the road.”

He also touched on his role within Shinedown and how his lifestyle supports the demands of the business side of the band.

“Obviously the four of us — myself and Eric and [Shinedown guitarist] Zach [Myers] and [Shinedown drummer] Barry [Kerch] — are with each other a lot, and they all have home bases and things like that. But I’m also the one in the band that’s doing a lot of the behind the scenes with regards to the business, and what are the next steps and how are we gonna negotiate certain things,” Smith said. “A lot of times, just to make an impact, I will fly to where I need to go. And if it’s overseas, I’ll just fly overseas. I can kind of get up by living the way that I do, I can kind of move on a dime. And it just works for me. Am I saying that I’ll never have a home base? No. I just don’t know where that is currently.”

Smith left the door open to eventually settling down, but made clear that for now, his current lifestyle continues to serve both his personal and professional needs.

Smith has described himself as a true minimalist who has gone without a mortgage for ten years. He spends the bulk of his time in extended-stay accommodations rather than luxury hotels. He often selects lodging near grocery stores and has expressed frustration when hotels fail to disclose ongoing construction to his travel agent upon arrival. The lifestyle, in his view, is not a sacrifice — it is a framework that allows him to operate with maximum flexibility and focus entirely on music and the business of the band.

That flexibility is being put to full use in 2026. Shinedown is currently in the midst of the second act of their Dance, Kid, Dance tour, a global campaign that saw its first leg play 54 dates across 11 countries in 2025. The current leg is running through the United States and is scheduled to extend to Australia and Europe through November 2026. Smith has stated that the band’s goal for 2026 is to perform on all seven continents.

A particularly significant milestone on the horizon is Shinedown’s return to Australia and New Zealand in September 2026, their first visit to the region in 16 years. The band will co-headline the run alongside British rock veterans Bush. It is one of the most anticipated rock tours of the year in that part of the world.

The relentless touring pace is also reflected in the band’s latest studio work. Shinedown released their eighth studio album, EI8HT, in 2025. It is an 18-track collection that carries deeply personal themes. Among its most emotionally resonant tracks is “Three Six Five,” which Smith wrote in response to the death of his mother, Patricia, in January 2025. The album’s themes of loss, transience, and perseverance mirror the nomadic life Smith has built for himself — one that, by his own account, he has no immediate plans to change.
