Within Temptation’s Sharon den Adel recently opened up about her admiration for Nirvana and defended their live album despite its imperfect sound quality, in an interview with Louder Sound.
The Dutch metal vocalist explained how Nirvana became her gateway into heavy music. She shared her thoughts on their live recording “From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah.”
“Nirvana got me into heavy music. Although not directly into metal. It was such an important time in my youth, and they were the first band I really fell in love with,” den Adel said. “They were my favorite band, and still are.”
She went on to express regret about missing the chance to see them perform live. She also defended their raw live album.
“I never saw them live – I was supposed to go and see them at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, but my parents didn’t allow me to go! They have this live album, From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah, and it doesn’t sound that ‘good’, but I love it for that,” she continued. “It has a rawness.”
Den Adel concluded by explaining the deeper connection she felt with the band’s emotional impact.
“They just translated the emotion of a certain part of the youth at that time. How misunderstood they felt,” she said. “They could do nothing wrong in my eyes.”
Den Adel’s appreciation for the album’s imperfect sound quality reflects the broader significance of this posthumous release in Nirvana’s catalog. It also shows its enduring impact on fans worldwide.
The live album that den Adel references holds considerable historical importance in Nirvana’s discography. uDiscover Music reported that the compilation was eventually assembled by bassist Krist Novoselic, who also supplied the liner notes, and drummer Dave Grohl. The album features 16-17 live tracks recorded between 1989 and 1994, spanning the band’s entire career from the Bleach era through the In Utero period.
The album was released on October 1, 1996, approximately 2.5 years after Kurt Cobain’s death in April 1994. It represented the band’s second posthumous release following MTV Unplugged in New York. Nirvana Wiki noted that the material was originally intended as part of a two-disc set called Verse Chorus Verse, making its eventual release particularly meaningful for fans seeking to experience Nirvana’s live energy.
Despite the “rawness” that den Adel mentioned, the album achieved remarkable commercial success. Wikipedia documented that it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling nearly 159,000 copies in its first week of release. The album spent 25 weeks on the chart. It became the band’s sixth platinum album in the US since 1991, marking their third consecutive album to debut at number one.
The enduring appeal of From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah, as evidenced by den Adel’s continued appreciation for its unpolished sound, demonstrates how Nirvana’s authentic live performances continue to resonate with musicians and fans decades after the band’s end. The album serves as a testament to the band’s ability to capture the raw emotion and energy that defined the grunge movement. It influenced countless artists across various genres.
