The Moment Steven Tyler Thought He Was Losing Joe Perry

Although, in 2022, Joe Perry told StarTribune that his health was well enough to go on performing, there were a few instances, where he went through problems on stage, causing Steven Tyler to think he was losing his bandmate.

Back in 2016, a few months before his tour with Aerosmith, the guitarist performed with Hollywood Vampires in Brooklyn, New York. Halfway through the show, Perry struggled while playing ‘I Got A Line On You.’

Then, he went behind a wall on stage, where police and fire officials attended to him. The Aerosmith member got taken to a hospital, and people rumored that he had a heart attack during the performance.

Hollywood Vampires vocalist Alice Cooper later revealed that Perry’s issue was actually ‘dehydration and exhaustion.’ Still, Steven Tyler expressed his worries about the incident and his bandmate’s health in an interview with Billboard around that time. He said:

“[I’m] really concerned. I know they’re putting out nothing, but he’s recovering; he’s really good; he fainted exhaustion. But I know my brother. He’s just about the only other guy that’s as passionate about his art as I am. He’s always asking me to do three, four [Aerosmith] shows in a row, and I can’t. I’ll blow my voice out.”

The singer also brought up the guitarist’s busy schedule and its effects on him by adding:

“I know how to maintain my career, my health, and Joe’s passionate. I don’t think he knows how to. I think he’s out there, and someone’s overbooking him. They’re doing like eight or nine shows in a row, or five in a row. I think they’re all a little burnt. I think they may need to look at that. Not young anymore, y’know?”

Joe Perry was set to hit the road with Aerosmith for their South American tour in September 2016. So, Tyler also commented on the incident’s effect on the band’s upcoming performances by explaining:

“I don’t give a shit about the band. I want Joe to live. I’m really concerned and worried right now that I’m not getting any news. I’m a little bummed out, and that scares me.”

He went on to delve more into his fear for the guitarist’s health:

“I don’t know whether it’s heat prostration or whether he’s been working himself too hard or getting off on wrong things passionately. I don’t know what it is, but I know that nobody’s talking to me. I can only tell you that Joe’s my brother, and I love him so much.”

Despite the vocalist’s concerns, the guitarist got back on his feet quickly and returned to the stage with Hollywood Vampires. Then, he joined Aerosmith during their shows, but the 2016 incident didn’t stay as the only health scare Perry went through.

Two years later, he collapsed again, this time, at the backstage of a Billy Joel gig in New York City. He had to go to the hospital because of shortness of breath, and his upcoming show at Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp in Florida had to be called off.

By 2019, the guitarist got better and took part in Aerosmith’s Las Vegas shows. Now, he and the band are getting ready for their farewell tour, called ‘Peace Out,’ set to start this September.
