Steven Tyler’s Warning To Alice Cooper About Joe Perry

Every professional artist has a unique way of preparing to get in front of a crowd and perform at their best. Besides mental preparation and vocal warm-ups, physical well-being and getting into shape are also crucial factors that take live performances to the next level. Building stamina is especially important for some artists and acts if the show requires energetic physical activity.

This is often the case in Alice Cooper’s shows considering the rocker’s extraordinary performances. Despite his age, the singer still actively tours and does everything to stay in good shape and perform consistent shows to his fans. However, of course, putting on such physically challenging shows at frequent intervals is not an easy job for everyone, including Joe Perry, who once collapsed on the road and made his bandmate Steven Tyler worried about him.

How Did Joe Perry Collapse Backstage?

Back in 2016, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry collapsed during a gig with supergroup Hollywood Vampires and worried his fans and loved ones. When the incident occurred, the guitarist was playing a show at the Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island, New York, along with his Hollywood Vampires bandmates Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp. It was reported that dehydration and exhaustion caused the musician to lose consciousness and collapse backstage.

Then, he was transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, there was nothing serious about his health condition, and he was released from the hospital in a short time. In the following months after the terrifying incident, the guitarist’s bandmate Alice Cooper talked about it in an appearance on CBS Local in 2016 and recalled Steven Tyler’s warning to him about Joe Perry.

What Did Steven Tyler Say To Alice Cooper About Joe Perry?

The rocker said in a previous conversation that he had just assumed that Joe Perry was used to giving the same number of performances as him, which was five times a week. However, he soon realized it was exhausting for Perry because they would do only two shows a week with Aerosmith.

While they were on their eighth show in ten days, the musician suddenly collapsed backstage. Cooper recalled talking to Joe Perry before the gig and learning he had not eaten well in recent days. The Godfather of Shock Rock said he was glad it was nothing serious because the guitarist was back on stage several days later.

Alice Cooper speaking on Joe Perry’s collapse:

“I didn’t realize Aerosmith only did two shows a week. Honestly, I just figured everybody was like me. I do five shows a week and very physical shows. We were on our eighth show in 10 days. It was pretty brutal. I think he was dehydrated and basically exhausted.

I talked to him before the show, and he said, ‘I don’t think I’ve eaten anything in three days.’ I went, ‘Well, that’s not smart.’ It wasn’t his heart, though, and it wasn’t anything vital because four or five days later, he was on stage with us, and I’d never seen him look so good.”

Later during the interview, Cooper revealed that Joe Perry’s Aerosmith bandmate Steven Tyler called him to learn about the guitarist’s condition and warn Alice. Tyler told Cooper not to put Perry back on stage because he was highly worried about his bandmate. He feared that Perry’s health could worsen if he continued performing. Then, Cooper told Tyler he would talk to Perry to see how he was doing.

Alice Cooper’s words on Steven Tyler’s warning:

“Steven called me and said, ‘Hey, don’t put him back on stage I’m afraid.’ I went, ‘Look, I’m going to talk to him and see how he is.’ I went up to his room. He looked unbelievable, sounded great, got up, and played the whole show. I never heard him play that good, so he’s back.”

When Cooper went to Joe Perry’s room, he looked completely fine and ready to get on the stage. So, the guitarist performed the whole show without any other health problems. However, it sounds like this experience taught the rocker that he needs to take better care of himself.
