In a recent interview with Rick Beato, The Police drummer Stewart Copeland shed light on his perspective regarding why he believes the band disbanded at the right moment. As he reflected on the anticipation of concluding their 2007-2008 tour, Copeland recalled assuring his bandmate Sting that they would no longer make any albums. He recalled:

“The last few shows, Stingo and I would count, ‘Okay, how many more [shows]? 12? How many more hours, minutes, will we be stuck with each other on stage?’ By that time, I was able to reassure him, ‘Dude, we’re not making an album. I know everyone around us is hoping we [would], but know that you haven’t got songs for The Police… So you don’t need to worry about that. We’re good. We’ve got to play until this show here, and we’re fine. Let’s just enjoy it.’ And he did.”

What Stopped The Police’s ‘Starvation’?

Despite reuniting in 2003 and 2007, The Police’s initial longevity was attributed to Sting’s dedication to his bandmates, as Copeland said during an earlier interview. He dismissed the possibility of another Police reunion for what he describes as ‘honorable reasons,’ asserting that the trio will maintain their strong friendship as long as they refrain from attempting to collaborate again.

During their years together, the band experienced ‘starvation’ until one of Sting’s acts helped the band get it together. Copeland explained earlier:

“So it’s got all these building blocks of The Police and it’s an interesting part of the story because that’s when we were starving for like a year and a half, until Sting started writing great songs.”
