Richard Osman, TV presenter and author, shared his observations about Sleep Token’s musical style on The Rest is Entertainment.
Sleep Token recently achieved a number one position in America. Osman offered his perspective on the band’s unique sound and mysterious identity.
“To be number one in America, number one album in America is huge. It’s a huge deal. And that’s exactly what Sleep Token have just done with their fourth album, which is called – and this will give you an idea of the type of band Sleep Token are – Even in Arcadia,” Osman said.
He elaborated on the band’s distinctive image: “Now, Sleep Token are one of those bands, nobody knows who they are, because they are always masked, at all times. The lead singer is called Vessel – probably not his real name – and the other members of the band are called, in Roman numerals II, III, and IV.”
Osman expressed surprise at the band’s musical direction. “It’s hard rock. It’s not hard rock, this is what shocked me. It’s the least metal thing I’ve ever heard.”
“Genuinely, if you’ve not listened to them, go on to Spotify or, you know, buy an album and have a listen, because it’s sort of everything all at once. There’s some nu metal there, there’s EDM in there, here’s alt. pop, there’s pop-rap, there’s a bit of shoegaze… it’s a very, very peculiar sound.”
Sleep Token continues to gain international recognition following their chart-topping success in America.
Recent critical assessments echo Osman’s observations about the band’s genre-defying sound.
Reviews from Man of Much Metal highlighted the band’s latest album’s sophisticated composition. The publication praised its balance of delicate melodies and powerful sound explosions, particularly in the title track’s progression from gentle birdsong to intense arrangements.
Critical acclaim has followed the band’s evolution. Montreal Rocks awarded the album a perfect score. The publication celebrated its innovative approach to modern metal.
Album of the Year spotlighted the band’s musical versatility. The review specifically noted “Ascensionism” for its distinctive rap-styled verses and contribution to the album’s expansive sound palette.
The band’s genre-transcending approach has created diverse reactions in the music community. Some critics celebrate their experimental style. Others struggle with their departure from conventional metal sounds. Osman’s comments have now brought this discussion to a broader audience.
