Roger Glover has reflected his thoughts on one of Deep Purple’s most popular albums, ‘Machine Head.’
In just a week, the band will be celebrating the 52nd anniversary of their sixth studio album, which helped them to get the recognition they deserved. In a new interview with Consequence, the bassist explained the importance of the album that ‘defined’ Deep Purple. He said:
“You can’t hide from the fact that it’s become basically ‘the album’ that has defined Purple. It didn’t feel like that at the time, but it’s only through the passing of time and decades and reissues, etcetera. It’s still the blueprint of what Deep Purple is all about.”
Deep Purple’s Most Popular Song Is Actually A ‘Filler’ Song

Just like being the most popular album in the band’s discography, the most popular song of the band also takes place in the same album. In fact, Deep Purple members did not expect it to get so big, since it was only a ‘filler song.’ Discussing their sixth studio album in an earlier interview, the frontman Ian Gillan revealed how ‘Smoke On The Water’ made it into the album as a filler track:
“It was just another riff, like ‘Into The Fire.’ We didn’t make a big deal out of it, and it wasn’t being considered as a track for the album. It was a jam at the first sound-check. We didn’t work on the arrangement – it was a jam. ‘Smoke’ only made it onto the album as a filler track because we were short of time. On vinyl, thirty-eight minutes – nineteen minutes per side – was the optimum time if you wanted good quality, and we were about seven minutes short with one day to go. So we dug out the jam and put vocals to it.”
