Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch recently shared his thoughts on the true meaning of Christmas while criticizing religious hypocrisy in a holiday message posted on Instagram.

The musician’s statement focused on the significance of Christ’s birth and the divine compassion it represents. He also addressed what he sees as misguided religious attitudes.

“I want to wish you a very merry Christmas. And incredible and happy New Year. A lot of you guys might be still wondering why a baby? Why a manger? A deity, who humbles himself to stooped down to our level is a God who is truly and completely understands everything that we’re going through,” Welch said.

He continued to elaborate on the deeper meaning behind the Christmas story and its message of divine empathy.

“Enduring the harshest realities of being flesh… rejection, mockery, suffering, and a dehumanizing death, enabled him to extend a divine empathy and compassion towards us that we probably will never truly comprehend. That’s the reason this deity entered our world, submitting to this crazy life on earth,” he explained.

Welch then addressed what he perceives as religious hypocrisy. He maintained a message of love and forgiveness.

“It’s a breathtaking story. I honestly can’t understand why it’s so controversial. Oh wait… it’s the legalistic, religious fools that turn love into noise! But since it’s Christmas, I’ll bite my tongue and say this: the gift is for them too… if they can wake up. Love and forgiveness, even toward our enemies, is the true currency of this message. Kill ’em with kindness,” he concluded.

This Christmas message reflects Welch’s ongoing journey with faith that began nearly two decades ago. It continues to influence his public statements and musical career.

Society of Rock reported that Welch shocked fans in 2005 when he stepped away from Korn after giving his life to Christ following a spiritual encounter. The guitarist’s conversion came after he overcame methamphetamine addiction through his faith. This marked a dramatic turning point in both his personal life and career trajectory.

Welch’s recent comments about religious hypocrisy align with his previous public statements defending marginalized communities. Alternative Nation noted that the born-again Christian has frequently spoken publicly about his faith while condemning the use of religion as a weapon for hate. This was particularly evident in his Instagram post supporting the LGBTQ+ community against protesters where he declared “GOD IS LOVE.”

The guitarist’s faith journey has not prevented him from maintaining his connection to heavy metal music. Wikipedia documented that after leaving Korn in 2005, Welch released two autobiographies, a solo album, and formed a band named Love and Death before rejoining Korn in 2012. His return to the band demonstrated his ability to balance his Christian beliefs with his musical career in the metal genre.

Eternal Flames highlighted that Welch’s approach to faith differs from traditional evangelical methods as he treats faith as a lived relationship rather than demanding agreement from fans or bandmates. This perspective allows him to maintain authenticity in both his spiritual beliefs and his role in one of metal’s most influential bands.
