The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney recently chatted with podcast host Joe Rogan and shared a story about meeting Flea and John Frusciante in Madrid last summer.

In July, Carney and his bandmate Dan Auerbach found themselves beside Flea and Frusciante in a Madrid restaurant. The Black Keys were there to play on the Mad Cool Festival on July 7, and RHCP to headline the event on July 8. Carney decided to introduce himself, as he said:

“I was like, I’m going to go say what’s up. I went over, and I shook Flea’s hand, and then I went to go shake John Frusciante’s hand, and he’s like, ‘I don’t do that.’ And then Flea was like, ‘Excuse me, I’m going to go wash my hands.’ And they’re like, ‘We’re germaphobes.'”

How Meeting Jelly Roll Went For Carney

Meeting Jelly Roll for the first time was also quite an experience for the drummer. Carney met Roll back in 2010 through a mutual friend. The musician shared last year:

“I met Jelly Roll 13 years ago before he was famous. I think he’s just like right out of prison, probably it’s 2010, and I was there with this, uh, a friend of ours, Harmony Karine. We were in Nashville at this hip-hop show. It was this guy, Yelawolf was just coming out to starting to perform and I went and like, Jelly Roll was there. I didn’t know who he was, and Harmony was like joking around about something he thought we were. ‘Jell’ thought we were making fun of him, and he just rolled up to me and scared the living crap out of me. He was like, ‘Do you want to go motherf*cker?’ and I was like: ‘Uh-uh, nope, I’m good dude.’”

Still, it was wonderful to meet and work with former Oasis member Noel Gallagher for Carney. The Black Keys and Gallagher collaborated on the band’s upcoming album, ‘Ohio Players.’ In an April 2023 chat with NME, Carney praised Noel by calling him funny and talented.
