Former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony sparked rumors about a possible new musical project after sharing a video of himself jamming with guitarist Phil X and drummer Kenny Aronoff on Instagram.
The caption of the video hinted at an upcoming performance while leaving the door open to bigger plans.
“What are these guys up to? If you’re attending the Guitar Center drum off finale at the Fonda Theatre in LA Thursday evening, you will find out! Jammin’ with Phil X and Kenny Aronoff. New band?” Anthony wrote.
The post quickly drew a reaction from Anthony’s longtime Van Halen and Chickenfoot bandmate Sammy Hagar, who commented with a playful jab at seeing Anthony play with other musicians.
“This is like catching your partner cheating on you WTF thank God I love Phil & Kenny. I guess I’m just jealous,” Hagar wrote.
Anthony responded warmly to Hagar’s comment, reaffirming their bond.
“I still love ya brother,” Anthony replied.
Jeff Scott Soto also joined the conversation, saying, “Looks like we got snuffed out of this one, Sammy, hahaha, can’t wait to hear what you guys are up to!”
The trio’s chemistry is no accident. Their upcoming appearance together fits into a wider web of collaborations that already links all three musicians.
Guitar Center’s Drum-Off finale takes place on August 20 at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, hosted by comedian Bill Burr and Jane’s Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins. The closing set of the night is billed as “Kenny Aronoff and Friends.” The set features Aronoff, Anthony, and Phil X as an all-star power trio running through classic rock favorites, including songs associated with Van Halen and other major rock acts.
Phil X brings his own résumé of high-profile gigs into the mix. Phil X is best known as Bon Jovi’s guitarist since stepping in for Richie Sambora. He has also spent 2026 touring with Canadian rock veterans Triumph.
Kenny Aronoff’s connection to Anthony runs deeper than a one-off jam session. The veteran drummer has worked with artists ranging from John Fogerty to John Mellencamp, and he currently plays alongside Anthony in Sammy Hagar’s touring band. Hagar’s upcoming September residency in Las Vegas features the same lineup of Anthony on bass, Aronoff on drums, and Joe Satriani on guitar, alongside keyboardist Rai Thistlethwayte.
