Ben Eller discussed his experience replacing Brent Hinds in Mastodon during a recent interview with Guitar World.
“I went into this looking at it as one of the coolest things I could ever get to be a part of,” Eller said. “I also knew the backlash could potentially be brutal, especially given how incredible and important of a player Brent has been for the history of the band.”
“I was absolutely unprepared for the level of positivity and kindness I would receive from the fans after the gig,” he continued. “I cannot believe how accepting and wonderful they’ve been. It’s overwhelming!”
The YouTube content creator performed as a last-minute replacement at Tool’s Live in the Sand event. The Mastodon fanbase responded with unexpected positivity to his appearance.
Eller’s performance coincides with a pivotal moment in Mastodon’s history. Recent developments have transformed the group’s lineup.
Live For Live Music revealed that Brent Hinds has left Mastodon after 25 years. This departure marks the band’s first lineup change since 2001.
Loudwire confirmed that Mastodon will maintain their 2025 touring schedule. The plans include a U.S. co-headlining tour with Coheed and Cambria.
The band continues work on their next album, following their 2021 release ‘Hushed and Grim.’ Guitarist Bill Kelliher shared insights with Loudwire. The band is carefully evaluating candidates for a permanent replacement. They seek someone who matches their musical direction and group chemistry.
This period of transition has created opportunities for guest performers like Eller. His successful appearance demonstrates Mastodon’s ability to maintain their musical standards during significant changes.
