Måneskin drummer Ethan Torchio recently chatted with BBC Radio 2’s Johnnie Walker and discussed why he chose the Police icon Steward Copeland as his rock god, how Copeland influenced him as a young rocker-to-be, and helped him strengthen his bond with music.

Well, it might be safe to say that Måneskin has had quite a few influences from all over the rock scene, from Iggy Pop, who joined the band to remake the hit ‘I Wanna Be Your Slave,’ to another recent collaborator, Tom Morello. The act made it no secret that they’d grown up listening to the rock classics we all enjoy, and for Ethan, there was one fellow drummer who, perhaps, changed his life.

So, upon being asked who he would pick as his rock god, Torchio quickly made up his mind and uttered the name Steward Copeland, noting how he had grown up listening to his drumming with the Police and how Copeland’s passion for drumming inspired him to get closer to the musical theory and composition in general.

Ethan discussed how the Police drummer influenced him while he was only a teenager with the following:

“Hi, I’m Ethan from Måneskin, and I think that a kind of rock god that I really love, for me, is Steward Copeland, definitely, the drummer with the Police. He’s a great drummer. I really took so much inspiration from him when I was like 13 years old. And I also think that he helped me to get much closer to music and the musical composition [in] general.”

We all have musical heroes who inspire us and could be powerful enough to get us into making music. By performing with Måneskin and reigniting a new generation of rock, Ethan took what he learned from Copeland and carried it onto the stages, and who knows, maybe a young musician-to-be, one day, will be inspired by his drumming.
