Chad Smith Explains How Reuniting With John Frusciante Affected Red Hot Chili Peppers’ New Album

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith spoke in a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine and talked about how John Frusciante’s reunion affected their upcoming album.
John Frusciante joined Chili Peppers back in 1988 and recorded two studio records with the band until his departure in 1992. After getting addicted to drugs, which almost destroyed his life, John accepted to go rehab thanks to Flea in 1998. Following his recovery, Flea asked John to re-join the band, and they released their most successful record, ‘Californication.’
However, the guitarist left in 2009 once again to focus on his solo career. However, Red Hot Chili Peppers reunited with John Frusciante yet again in late 2019. After a short period, Chad Smith confirmed that they have been working on a new record with John. In his recent conversation, Chad reflected on the band’s upcoming record and explained what changed after John’s return.
According to Smith, Frusciante has been working really hard to create great music. On the other hand, the drummer pointed out that the new record will sound different from their latest records because John hasn’t been playing with the band for a long time. However, although he believes it’s will be different, it will sound like Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Chad Smith on the addition of John Frusciante:
“John’s been back for a while now. So it feels completely natural. He’s so into it. He’s working so hard. We’re all working hard, but he’s in there with all the overdubs and the magic that he brings.
Look, John hasn’t been in our group in ten years. That’s a long time. So of course it’s going to sound different, but it’s gonna sound like the four of us because we do have this special chemistry together. It sounds like Red Hot Chili Peppers, but it’s different and new, and to me that’s great… We really like it and we’re proud of it and it has to start there.”
Even though the community is expecting to get the new record soon, none of the band members have revealed the album’s name, release date, or any details. Most likely, the record will drop during their 2022 tour.
