Dogstar have clarified the story behind their long absence from the music scene, explaining that their 20-year break was not caused by a dramatic breakup or serious conflict.

The rock band, featuring Keanu Reeves, Bret Domrose, and Robert Mailhouse, recently addressed the subject in an interview with Loudwire. Many fans believed that Dogstar had fully ended after disappearing from the scene for more than two decades. However, the band now says the truth was much simpler.

With humor, the members compared the long break to a relationship that never fully ended.

“We did break up for 20 some odd years,” the band joked. “You know, we were just seeing other people.”

The comment shows how lightly Dogstar now looks back on the situation. Instead of describing the hiatus as a painful split, the band framed it as a natural pause in their friendship and creative partnership.

Dogstar originally formed in the early 1990s and became known partly because of Reeves’ fame as an actor. But the group always presented itself as a real band rather than a celebrity side project. The lineup includes Reeves on bass, Domrose on vocals and guitar, and Mailhouse on drums.

After releasing music in the 1990s and early 2000s, Dogstar stepped away from public activity. Their 2023 return marked the band’s first major comeback after more than 20 years away, including a performance at BottleRock Napa Valley and the release of new music.

Their comeback album, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees, was released on October 6, 2023. It was their first album since 2000, making the return especially meaningful for longtime fans.

The band has also explained in previous interviews that the reunion happened naturally. According to Entertainment Weekly, the idea began after a breakfast in San Francisco following The Matrix Resurrections, when a conversation about equipment slowly turned into plans to play music together again.

That background supports what the band is saying now: Dogstar’s return was not forced, and the long break did not destroy the connection between the members. Instead, Reeves, Domrose, and Mailhouse found that their friendship and musical chemistry were still there.

The “seeing other people” joke also fits the band’s relaxed attitude toward their comeback. Rather than trying to create drama around the hiatus, Dogstar seem to be making it clear that life simply moved in different directions for a while.

Since returning, the band has continued to tour and perform new material. In 2024, Dogstar announced a Summer Vacation Tour across the U.S. and Canada, showing that the reunion was more than a one-time nostalgia event.

For fans, the message is simple: Dogstar did not end because the members hated each other. They just took a very long break.

Now, after more than two decades away, the band appears to be treating its second chapter with the same sense of friendship, humor, and freedom that helped bring it back in the first place.
