Tenacious D’s frontman Jack Black recently gave an interview to Metal Hammer and shared his regret over taking up the Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan’s offer in his band’s starting days.
As one of their early supporters, Keenan asked Tenacious D to open for Tool during three shows. Black discussed their performance as the opening act and the audience’s response, explaining:
“I didn’t feel like we weren’t ready for prime time. I just felt like, ‘Oh, this is what happens when we don’t go to the right audience.’ We know Tool. Tool’s great, but that crowd – they came for Tool, or you better be a lot like Tool. Ha ha! We were a lot softer than Tool. We came out playing ‘Jesus Ranch,’ and they were like, ‘What?!'”
Although they failed to meet the expectations of Tool’s fans, the band completed that night’s set at The Tejon Theatre and also performed the two remaining shows. Maynard also recalled Tenacious D opening for them in a chat with Lars Ulrich on his Beats 1 Show It’s Electric, saying:
“It’s David Cross and Greg Berhendt [who were involved in a bit with them as sports announcers] getting pelted with quarters. And time after that, Tenacious D opened for us and got booed off the stage.”
In other news, Tenacious D is getting ready to hit the road in the fall with their North American tour, which kicks off on September 6 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and continues through a September 15 gig in Austin, Texas.
