HIM’s Ville Vallo: ‘The Countdown To The End Of My Life Has Started’

Ville Valo recently spoke with Metal Hammer about the chances of reuniting HIM. Sharing his thoughts about the band, which disbanded in 2017, he explained:

“I don’t find it an appetizing idea at the moment. We haven’t really been in touch, which tells you a lot. If the phone starts ringing at some point, then we’ll see. I love the guys, and I hope that they still care about me, too. So maybe one day, but it would have to be for good reason.”

After HIM ended, the 47-year-old singer turned his attention to a solo career, releasing his debut studio album, ‘Neon Noir’ last year. He referred to this new phase and shared:

“But the countdown to the end of my life has started; I don’t have time to reinvent the wheel, so I have to put all my effort into whatever is happening next. It’s lovely to have a family and lovely to have that co-dependency in a band, but with this, the cool thing was that I didn’t have to call anybody and ask for permission. I’d like to keep it like that for the time being.”

He Doesn’t Want To Take That Risk

After almost three decades as a band, HIM broke up with a final show together on New Year’s Eve 2017. Valo was open to bringing the band back at some point in early 2023, as he told in an interview to ‘never say never.’

Later, the singer changed his mind, telling Czech TV Česká Televize:

“It would have to be for a good reason. There would have to be some new music or whatever. Just playing the old songs wouldn’t make any sense. Maybe one day. But I said… I felt that that’s done and dusted with. It was a good part of my life, and it was a great that we ended it. And it would be risky to try it again.”

Valo Is Focused On His Solo Projects

Following a short period with another band, Valo’s solo career kicked off in 2020 under the name VV. Following an EP called ‘Gothica Fennica Vol. 1,’ his first solo studio record came out and received critical acclaim. Speaking of his new project with Metal Hammer, he said:

“What I’m happy about is that I was able to pull the whole thing off and not face total hate from the audience. There seems to be a new generation of people coming to the gigs, and not only for the HIM songs. With VV, there’s been a lot of firsts.”

About the songs in his latest album, the singer added:

“I wrote the whole album myself, I played all the instruments, I produced the album myself, there was a lot of me, myself and I. Where Prince and Andrew Eldritch and all those self-centered geniuses lit the torch, I followed. I had to be really humble, and trust my ears, and trust my instincts.”
