Geddy Lee recently addressed criticism regarding Rush’s decision to continue using the band name for their upcoming reunion tour without late drummer Neil Peart. He made the statement in a piece shared on Classic Rock.
The Rush frontman explained the band’s reasoning behind maintaining their original name despite the lineup change. New drummer Anika Nilles is taking over for Peart.
“When the band ended, we said it’s only Rush with Neil in it. Which, of course, is true. Rush as most people know it,” Lee said. “But, you know, over five gigs we will be playing forty Rush songs. So what the fuck should we call it, Iron Maiden?”
Lee further elaborated on the practical considerations behind their decision.
“We were twisting ourselves into a pretzel to try to avoid using the name that we have had for fifty years, and even before Neil came,” he continued. “It just seems silly to go on as ‘Lee And Lifeson Present The Music Of…’ Let’s cut to the chase, shall we? Let’s just be who we are and have been for over fifty years.”
The comments come as Rush prepares for their reunion tour. This marks their return to the stage following Peart’s passing.
Lee’s statements follow the band’s surprise return to the stage at the 2026 Juno Awards. They debuted their new lineup for the first time since 2015.
Live for Live Music reported that Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson reunited under the Rush banner for a surprise appearance at Canada’s Juno Awards. They introduced their new drummer Anika Nilles. The performance marked a significant moment for fans who had not seen the band perform since their final concert in 2015.
Guitar Player noted that the new-look Rush tore through one of their first-ever songs at the awards ceremony. They performed alongside keyboardist Loren Gold. This appearance served as a preview of what fans can expect from their upcoming reunion tour.
The upcoming tour, dubbed “Fifty Something,” carries special significance as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the album 2112. It also honors Neil Peart’s legacy. Ad Hoc News revealed that the tour will include tributes to Peart at each show. It is set to begin June 6 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, the same venue where Rush performed their final concert in 2015.
The decision to continue as Rush represents a significant shift from the band’s previous stance. Ultimate Classic Rock highlighted that Lee had previously defended the decision to tour again as Rush after the band had said they would never use the name again following Neil Peart’s death. This highlights the emotional and practical complexities surrounding the reunion.
