Being a well-known star comes with a price, like the constant exposure of your private life, along with the paparazzis that do not know what boundaries are. While some artists are uncomfortable with this, some like to be in the spotlight all the time. Shannon Larkin, who joined a chat with the 2020’d podcast, compared David Lee Roth and Tommy Lee in this regard.
“Yeah, that’s true, and that’s not – I don’t think – a secret,” the rocker responded when asked about the brief period Lady Gaga was dating Sully Erna and how Gaga had encouraged Erna to smoke. “I don’t think Sully would bum out if people knew he dated Lady Gaga. I mean, she’s hot, and she’s mega-talented.”
Larkin continued, “What I mean by that is, Travis Barker, Tommy Lee, whatever, it’s dudes that have public girlfriends that are super famous too. But they’re different than Sully. Sully’s an east coast guy… L.A. dudes and west coast dudes, they’re flashier, maybe.” According to him, Erna did not like to disclose the details of his private life like Tommy Lee.
He also said that David Lee Roth’s and Tommy Lee’s lifestyles are pretty similar. The drummer noted, “Their rockstar-ism is more David Lee Roth than, I don’t know, Eddie Vedder… We’re probably even flashier than Eddie, who’ll show up in an army jacket on your ass. You don’t even recognize him. We’re in between them [Pearl Jam] and the dudes with the flashy girls in their arms.”
If you do a quick search on the internet, you’ll see some users on various forums who are annoyed with the fact that we are talking too much about Tommy Lee’s personal life rather than his drumming style and technique. Indeed, he is a rockstar with a very public life, there is no doubt about it. However, such a comparison may not be very pleasing to an outspoken figure like DLR.
Yet, again, if you do a quick research, you will see that David Lee Roth is also not at all shy about making some rather striking statements about his private life. He even once said that he ‘slept with every pretty girl with two legs in her pants.’ This is a direct quote…
So, although it would be hard to find something in common musically between the two apart from the energetic stage shows, there seems to be some similarity in their off-stage attitudes and how they prefer to live their private lives.
