During a recent interview with SoundMojo, Doug Aldrich of The Dead Daisies discussed John Corabi’s departure from and return to the band, including the dynamics involved in his replacement of Glenn Hughes after four years.
According to the interviewer, Corabi once said in an interview that in his perspective, ‘everybody in the band needed time away’ and that ‘it was the perfect time to come back.’ Later, Aldrich was asked if he shared that sentiment. After expressing gratitude for the band, he explained how Hughes replaced Corabi. The guitarist said:
“For a singer, it’s pretty different because, especially during that time when John was working with us at the end of 2017. ’17 and ’18, we were crazy busy. ’16, ’17, ’18. So, in the beginning of ’19, I think John was ready for a break. He had been singing his ass off five days a week, and we were doing meet and greets and acoustic gigs and morning radio shows, and I think he wanted to just chill for a little bit which was cool.”
Aldrich then went on to explain why he thinks Hughes can’t replace Corabi:
“We brought in Glenn, which was great; we made a left turn with Glenn, we didn’t try, and there’s no replacing John Corabi. He’s a very rock n’ roll frontman, and see, he’s so fun to tour with, and he puts on a great show, and we wanted to do something different. So we got Glenn, and we kinda took, musically, a little bit of a detour; that was great, but now John is back.”
Corabi left the band during the pandemic and was replaced by Hughes until earlier this year. The band hinted at the news in a social media video that showed Corabi rehearsing with former Whitesnake bassist Michael Devin, another new addition to the band. The vocalist explained his departure was due to needing a break from the on-the-go lifestyle and resting his vocals.
