Glenn Hughes recently sat down with the Classic Rock Podcast and shared that he views his vocal abilities as ‘a gift from above.’

In response to a question about how he maintains the quality of his voice, the singer said:

“I am thankful and grateful that I’ve been given this gift. I don’t look at it as my voice; I look at it as being a gift from above. It’s something that’s been given to me freely, and therefore, I take it out of this beautiful little case and attach it to myself.”

The former Deep Purple vocalist also shared his approach to vocal care, explaining:

“And I take care of myself. I live very healthily. We do a tremendous amount of warm-ups each night. The department of the vocal cords is very important to me. I haven’t smoked a cigarette in my life. I haven’t had any alcohol in three decades.”

When the host asked if his avoidance of smoking and alcohol really helps, Glenn replied by stating:

“Oh yeah, and I really do take care of the vocal cords, you know. And to be in a happy environment and to have this lifetime or lifetimes of stories to announce when I’m writing lyrics and to sing them with my open heart, it’s important.”

With his commitment to vocal care, it is no surprise that the singer has been still touring extensively. He currently performs ‘Burn’ by Deep Purple, as well as songs from the band’s ‘MKIII’ and ‘MKIV’ eras in his tour titled ‘Glenn Hughes Performs Classic Deep Purple Live – Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the album ‘Burn.”

The bassist also announced a co-headlining US tour with Yngwie Malmsteen for August and September. The guitarist will deliver a compilation of his greatest hits, while Hughes will play the Deep Purple classics.
