Shinedown singer Brent Smith recently explained the band’s controversial decision to withdraw from Kid Rock’s Rock The Country Festival. He addressed the backlash and division that followed their announcement, as reported by Rolling Stone.

Smith’s comments focused on the band’s commitment to unity and their experience witnessing unprecedented conflict among fans.

“We saw infighting that we had never seen before, and for us, it was our job to diffuse it,” Smith said. “I just want to remind everybody, it says the ‘United States of America’ — united. And a lot of people right now don’t feel united.”

The frontman acknowledged the mixed reactions to their decision while defending the band’s stance.

“There were certain people that were not happy about [pulling back]. I will say that there was an overwhelming amount of people that agreed with the decision,” he continued. “You’re entitled to your opinion 1,000 percent in this country, and that’s one of the beautiful things about it.”

The band had previously announced their withdrawal with a statement emphasizing their role as “everyone’s band.” They committed to bringing people together through music rather than participating in events they believed would create further division.

Shinedown’s departure reflects broader tensions surrounding the festival, which has faced scrutiny over its political associations and lineup decisions. The controversy has extended beyond just one band’s participation. It has raised questions about the intersection of music and politics in today’s cultural landscape.

Exclaim! reported that Shinedown joins other artists like Carter Faith and Morgan Wade who also pulled out amid uproar over the festival’s MAGA-leaning image. The withdrawals highlight the challenges artists face when navigating politically charged events and maintaining their fan base across diverse political viewpoints.

The Rock The Country festival continues as planned despite the artist departures. Music Row noted that the multi-city tour features Kid Rock and Nickelback as headliners. Varying acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Travis Tritt will join different stops across 11 small towns starting in April 2025.

The festival’s 2025 lineup remains robust with powerhouse performers including Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, and Jelly Roll scheduled to appear at various locations. Rock The Country’s official website confirmed that the tour will hit eight American cities from May through the summer. It maintains its appeal to country and rock music fans despite the recent controversies.

The ongoing situation demonstrates how artists increasingly find themselves making difficult decisions about which events align with their values and brand identity. This is particularly true in an era where entertainment and politics often intersect in complex ways.
