Bob Dylan shared a pointed birthday message to Pete Townshend on X (formerly Twitter). The message made a subtle reference to The Who’s recent drummer situation.

The Who recently parted ways with drummer Zak Starkey. Dylan’s birthday wishes appeared to serve as a veiled commentary on these recent lineup changes.

“Happy birthday Pete. Who’s the new boss? Is he like the old boss? Have you met him yet? Say hello to Roger,” Dylan wrote in his message.

Dylan’s reference played on The Who’s famous song “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and its iconic line “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” The message simultaneously questioned the band’s recent drummer change.

The message emerged during a complex period involving Starkey’s departure from the band.

The Los Angeles Times revealed that The Who fired Starkey twice in 2025. The first dismissal occurred in April after the band’s Teen Cancer Trust benefit concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The second firing came on May 18, ending Starkey’s nearly 30-year tenure with the band.

People magazine documented Starkey’s dispute of the band’s version of events. He revealed his firing and claimed the band requested him to falsely state he had quit to pursue other projects.

Pete Townshend addressed the situation in statements to The A.V. Club. “After many years of excellent drumming from Zak, the moment has arrived for a change. A significant time.” The band subsequently announced Scott Devours as their new drummer for their final farewell shows.

Dylan’s birthday message to Townshend carried extra weight due to its timing. His reference to “the new boss” gained particular significance in light of these recent lineup changes.
