Wolfgang Van Halen recently responded to his uncle Alex Van Halen’s statements about his involvement in upcoming Van Halen recordings. He clarified his role in the project during an interview with Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk.
The younger Van Halen addressed Alex’s recent comments about him playing bass parts on previously unreleased Van Halen recordings that will appear on Alex’s upcoming album.
“I haven’t played anything yet. So, I’m not sure what Al is talking about in that respect,” Wolfgang said. “They could be older ideas that maybe we worked on 15 years ago or something, ’cause there was a couple of years where Dad, Al and I were just jamming in the studio for three years or something.”
Wolfgang emphasized his supportive role in the project rather than taking a leading position.
“But, yeah, I really do think it’s more of Al’s thing to talk about. I’m really just here in a position of helping him with whatever he needs,” he continued. “If he needs bass on something, I’m there. If he needs anything else, I’m there. Whatever he needs. But it’s definitely his thing to spearhead. And I am in a support position.”
He reiterated his stance on the collaborative nature of the project.
“I’m there in a support position as well. Al is the decision guy. I’m just there to help him with whatever he needs,” Wolfgang added. “So, again, I’m just in that support position.”
This response comes after Alex Van Halen recently stated that most of the bass parts on his upcoming album feature Wolfgang. He described them as “recordings that were made ready for the next record.”
Wolfgang’s comments provide additional context to what appears to be a significant project involving previously unreleased Van Halen material that has been in development for years.
Blabbermouth reported that Alex Van Halen confirmed the album he is working on with Steve Lukather includes previously unreleased, unfinished Van Halen recordings. These tracks represent material that was intended as “the next record.” They feature drums, guitars, and Wolfgang’s bass parts that were already recorded before Eddie Van Halen’s passing in 2020.
The project has taken on added significance as Alex collaborates with Steve Lukather, a longtime friend of Eddie’s, to bring these recordings to completion. Guitar World noted that Alex is committed to finishing the material to high standards. He refuses to release it in “embryonic form,” ensuring that Eddie’s final musical contributions receive the proper treatment they deserve.
The album project faces the challenge of finding an appropriate vocalist to complete the recordings. Ultimate Classic Rock revealed that Alex had previously considered legendary vocalists Robert Plant or Paul Rodgers for the project. However, no final decision has been made regarding who will handle the vocal duties for these unreleased tracks.
The revelation of this material represents what could be the final chapter in Van Halen’s storied catalog. The band’s surviving members are working to honor Eddie’s legacy while ensuring the quality meets the standards that defined the group’s legendary career. The project underscores the deep musical bond between the Van Halen family members and their commitment to preserving Eddie’s artistic vision.
