Stryper frontman Michael Sweet recently defended David Lee Roth against fan criticism of his live performances. He explained why the vocalist was crucial to Van Halen’s success in a statement shared on Facebook.
Sweet’s statement addressed the importance of Roth’s contribution to Van Halen’s rise. He particularly defended him against recent criticism from fans.
“You all know how I feel about Van Halen. The first VH album changed my life. 1978. For many reasons,” Sweet said. “When I hear people trash talk David Lee Roth, it definitely ignites a spark, a fire in me. Why? Because he’s one of a kind. A unique talent/frontman who brought the energy that the band needed.”
Sweet emphasized that while Eddie Van Halen was clearly a virtuoso guitarist, Roth brought essential elements to the band’s success.
“Yes Eddie Van Halen was obviously a virtuoso guitarist and he single handedly changed the guitar world forever. Yet Dave brought swagger and soul to the band,” he continued. “He sang great on all the albums he recorded with Van Halen. Honestly (IMO), those early albums would not be what they are today without David. And I’ll go as far as to say that they would not have blown up as much as they did had it not been for David.”
The Stryper frontman acknowledged current limitations while defending Roth’s legacy and ongoing performances.
“Can he sing like he once did? No. Neither can most singers from the 70’s/80’s,” Sweet said. “Regardless, he deserves respect based on his contribution to VH, to music and to the rock world. He’ll always be a favorite of mine and I’ll always enjoy every single song he sang. And I’m very happy to see him out there still performing the best era of Van Halen. I hope to catch a show sometime soon.”
Sweet concluded by emphasizing both musicians’ unique and irreplaceable contributions to rock music.
“And one last thing – say what you want or think what you will – just as there will never be another Eddie Van Halen, there will never be another David Lee Roth,” he said.
Sweet’s defense comes at a time when Roth has returned to the spotlight with renewed touring activity. This has sparked both excitement and debate among fans about his current performance capabilities.
Blabbermouth reported that Roth launched a solo tour in April 2026. He has been performing a full set of Van Halen songs across multiple cities. The tour has included shows in Austin, Memphis, Nashville, and featured a notable guest appearance at Coachella on April 10, 2026.
The current conversation around Roth’s live performances has included mixed reactions from audiences and critics. Blake Nelson’s review noted that some recent coverage and fan discussions have described his performances as uneven. This provides context for the criticism that prompted Sweet’s passionate defense of the Van Halen frontman.
Roth’s return to active touring follows a significant period away from regular live performance. Wikipedia documented that he resumed public performances at the M3 Rock Festival on May 3, 2025, before announcing his current U.S. tour. This marked his re-entry into the live rock circuit despite the polarized reactions from audiences.
The debate over Roth’s current vocal abilities versus his historical contributions reflects a broader conversation in rock music about aging performers and their legacies. Sweet’s statement emphasizes that Roth’s impact on Van Halen’s success and rock music as a whole should be evaluated based on his peak contributions rather than current limitations. This perspective resonates with many longtime fans who witnessed the band’s original era.
