Ex-Smiths Frontman Morrissey Calls Oasis ‘Silly’ In His New Song

Former Smiths singer Morrissey revealed his debut song from the new album and the message behind the track during one of his latest Vegas concerts. The song’s lyrics consisted of criticism against those who sang a popular Oasis song, including the band, by defining them as ‘silly.’

A suicide bomber detonated a shrapnel-laden homemade bomb at the Manchester Arena while the attendees who joined Ariana Grande’s concert on May 22, 2017, were leaving the place. Twenty-two people died, and 1,017 were injured, making the attack one of the deadliest terror attacks in the UK. This tragic event devastated everyone worldwide, and several musicians honored the victims differently.

Oasis’ song ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger,’ released on their second studio album, ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?,’ became a symbol and anthem, and Noel Gallagher and U2 performed to honor the people that lost their lives because of the vicious and tragic event. However, it seems that Morrisey didn’t like using the band’s track and reflected his feelings about it in his new song and Las Vegas appearance on July 2, 2022.

Morrissey talked about his latest song, ‘Bonfire Of Teenagers,’ by describing its theme as a story about England’s 9/11, which was the Manchester Arena bombing. The singer emphasized that the main character is a female fan from that attack, and the song’s lyrics such as ‘And the silly people sing ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’/ And the morons sing and sway: ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger” drew significant attention. Morrissey called Oasis and others ‘silly’ because he would look back in anger until his death.

In his concert, Morrisey said:

“This song is new; it’s about England’s 9/11. Obviously, in jolly old England, most people won’t talk about it, but I will.”

Lyrics from the song read as follows:

“Oh, you should’ve seen her leave for the arena/ On the way, she turned and waved and smiled: ‘Goodbye,’ / And the silly people sing ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’/ And the morons sing and sway: ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’/ I can assure you I will look back in anger’ till the day I die.
