Wolf Van Halen Shares The Biggest Compliment He Heard From Axl Rose
Mammoth WVH founder Wolfgang Van Halen revealed that Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose praised a track from his debut studio album during an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock and defined it as the best compliment he ever received.
As you may recall, Guns N’ Roses were supposed to start their tour in 2020, but the concerts were rescheduled for 2021 and 2022 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Later, the band also announced that Wolfgang Van Halen’s Mammoth WVH would be the opening band for Guns N’ Roses. However, Wolf couldn’t join the first two concerts due to the COVID-19 case in the crew.
Thus, GNR’s 2021 North America tour began on July 31, 2021, in Pennsylvania without Mammoth WVH. Then, he joined the band in their New Jersey concert on August 5, 2021. Both GN’R and Mammoth WVH fans appreciated Wolfgang’s performance as the opening act with their comments on social media.
During his interview, Wolf Van Halen shared Axl Rose’s words about his recently released track, ‘Don’t Back Down,’ after one of their concerts. According to Wolf, Axl Rose said that he liked the song and its video very much and then hugged Wolf. Also, GN’R bassist Duff McKagan unveiled that Axl Rose defined ‘Don’t Back Down’ as pure rock and roll. Van Halen felt delighted and excited after he got ‘the biggest compliment’ from Axl Rose.
Wolfgang said in his interview that:
“Last night we were hanging out outside the bus, and everyone was starting to kind of come out, and he ended up walking out and gave me a hug. He told me that he really liked ‘Don’t Back Down’ and the video. He gave me a hug, and I couldn’t believe it. He was a really sweet guy.
The other day Duff came to our dressing room, and he’s a sweetheart as well, and he was telling us how Axl said that ‘Don’t Back Down’ is just straight rock and roll. I thought that was the biggest compliment I could have heard.“
