Two Door Cinema Club, an indie rock band from Northern Ireland, has experienced a series of highs and lows since they formed in 2007. Their early success with the debut album ‘Tourist History’ in 2010 was followed by more albums and tours. But the band faced its share of challenges, even taking a hiatus before making a return with their fourth album.
Before the recent health issues faced by bassist Kevin Baird, Two Door Cinema Club had already experienced a hiatus in their career. The break happened after the release of their third album, ‘Gameshow,’ in 2016. This hiatus was due to a combination of factors, including interpersonal issues among band members and the pressure of maintaining their success in the competitive music industry. This period of inactivity allowed the members to take a step back, reflect on their work, and regroup before making their return with the 2019 album, ‘False Alarm.’
More recently, in 2022, the band had to cancel their European headline tour due to health issues faced by bassist Kevin Baird. Fans are now left wondering what happened to Two Door Cinema Club and whether they will return to the scene.
In a 2022 NME article, the band shared news about Kevin Baird’s health via a message from Baird himself. He revealed that he had been receiving treatment for an ‘incurable autoimmune disease’ and that playing shows again had been really hard on his body.
After discussing the situation with his doctor, they decided that surgery to remove the affected organ was the next step. This surgery meant the band could no longer play their September and October dates in Europe, leading them to cancel their tour.
Kevin Baird’s Tweet about his health condition read:
“I’ve loved every second of playing shows again this summer, especially after such a long time away, but the harsh reality is that it’s been really hard on my body. I’ve been experiencing a lot of ups and downs in managing this bastard of a disease, and after a lot of long chats with my doctor, we’ve decided that the next step is surgery to remove the affected organ, after which it should be much more manageable.”
Two Door Cinema Club’s journey has been a bumpy one, with their hiatus and the cancellation of their European headline tour. But fans are also curious about the possibility of a new album following their 2022 release, ‘Keep On Smiling.’ This album was written and produced by the band both during and coming out of the COVID-enforced lockdowns, proving that they’re still dedicated to their music despite the obstacles they’ve faced.
So what does the future hold for them? Will they make a comeback? Although it remains uncertain at this point, they released a collaboration with Yesca for the track ‘Millionaire’ from their 2022 album this past February. Does this mean there might be new material on the horizon for them? It’s a waiting game!
