L.A. Guns founder Tracii Guns shared his thoughts on James Hetfield’s personal struggles and recovery journey on Talk Louder Podcast.

Guns reflected on his long-standing relationship with Metallica. He particularly praised Hetfield’s courage in publicly addressing personal demons.

“I think James Hetfield has ended up being the bravest man in rock,” Guns said. “I’ve known James, musically and personally, from a distance, but when we see each other, it’s, like, ‘Whoa, what’s up, bro?’ We’re not good friends, but we respect each other.”

Guns elaborated on Hetfield’s openness about his struggles: “I saw that he opened up his heart in public. He started talking about the demons that he has dealt with and how long. You go play stadiums and you go to the grocery store in your neighborhood. So it’s a big shift.”

The L.A. Guns guitarist emphasized Hetfield’s vulnerability, especially considering his status in the music industry.

“It is very difficult for a man to talk about those things with his friends, let alone talk about that sincerely in public, especially being the singer of fucking Metallica,” he explained. “So I have even more respect for James now than ever. I just think he’s so bold and so brave.”

Guns offered a thoughtful perspective on critics who dismiss Hetfield’s struggles due to his financial success.

“A lot of people are, like, ‘Oh, he’s a millionaire. Who feels sorry for a millionaire?’ It’s, like, dude, what does that got to do with…? Money doesn’t solve everything internally,” he concluded. “And he got sober. That’s tough. That’s hard shit to do, man. And on top of it, he wrote all that great music and those songs. I don’t say this very often, but God bless that fucking dude. What a badass.”

These comments emerged against the backdrop of Hetfield’s extensive journey with addiction and recovery spanning two decades.

Research from Renaissance Recovery revealed that Hetfield’s addiction battle became public in 2001. His struggles with alcohol severely impacted his personal life, leading his wife to remove him from their family home.

A report by FHE Health highlighted Hetfield’s initial success in recovery. He completed a seven-week rehabilitation program and maintained sobriety for 15 years.

Documentation from RWU Hawks Herald showed that Hetfield faced another challenge in 2019. He made the decision to re-enter rehabilitation, which led to the cancellation of Metallica’s Australian and New Zealand tour dates.

Following his 2019 relapse and treatment, Hetfield has maintained open discussions about sobriety challenges. He continues to address the pressures of fame and the music industry while inspiring fans and fellow musicians with his honest approach to recovery.
