The Time Anthony Kiedis Smuggled $30,000 For His Father As A Kid
Red Hot Chili Peppers founding member and lead vocalist Anthony Kiedis has an outstanding music career that spans over nearly four decades during which he released eleven studio albums with his band. Kiedis is primarily recognized for his early vocal style which consisted of rapping, but it has shifted to more conventional singing with recent records.
His lyrical style has evolved throughout his career with early recordings including topics such as sex and life in Los Angeles, more recent songs focus on love, addiction, and loss. His personal life reflects this change as well since Kiedis struggled with substance addiction for most of his life until he became sober in 2000 and remained as one since then.
His introduction to drugs isn’t like many other rock stars who got involved with substances when they start making music. Kiedis, on the other hand, was born into the drug scene as his actor father was a drug dealer himself. Furthermore, there was one time when he used 12-yer-old Kiedis for one of his jobs, and we’re here to break down the story.
Anthony Kiedis Had A Problematic Father
Anthony Kiedis’ parents divorced when he was three years old and he was raised by his mother Margaret ‘Peggy’ Noble. Each summer, the young Kiedis would visit his father Blackie Dammett in Hollywood for two weeks which was a time for them to bond.
When Kiedis was 12, he decided to move to Hollywood to live with his father full-time in 1974. His father was a struggling actor who also sold drugs to make a living. Since his father was a drug dealer, the future rocker was introduced to substances at an incredibly early age of 12.
While the two would often use marijuana and cocaine together, Kiedis also accidentally tried heroin for the first time at age 14, mistaking it for cocaine which doesn’t sound any less dangerous. It was clear that his father miserably failed at keeping his child away from the substances he was selling.
Believe it or not, drugs weren’t the only problematic aspect of their relationship as Kiedis’ father allowed his 12-year-old son to have sex with his 18-year-old girlfriend. When the musician asked his father’s permission and Blackie didn’t only approve, he also prepared a bed for them.
Anthony Kiedis Smuggled Money For His Father
It shouldn’t surprise you that Blackie Dammett got his son involved with his drug-dealing activities. As Anthony Kiedis revealed in his memoir, ‘Scar Tissue’ released in 2005, he once smuggled $30,000 for his father when he was only 12 years old.
Shortly after he moved to LA to live with his father, the future RHCP frontman went to Kenosha, Wisconsin for one of Dammett’s business trips. As expected, his father spent three days selling drugs while he left Kiedis to watch movies at home alone.
When it’s time to go back home, Blackie Dammett came up with an idea to safely carry his cash. That questionable idea was to tape a belt piece filled with $30,000 to 12-year-old Kiedis’ abdomen until they get home. Since nobody would suspect a child, the father and son didn’t get caught until they went back to LA.
In his book, Kiedis penned:
“My dad told me I’d be carrying the money because if they caught someone who looked like him with all that money, he’d be busted for sure…so we rigged a belt piece, stuffed it with cash, and taped it to my abdomen.”
There were countless questionable aspects of their relationship from giving drugs to a child to allowing him to have sex at the early age of 12. However, Anthony Kiedis had a caring relationship with his father until Blackie Dammett passed away due to dementia on May 12, 2021, at the age of 81.
