The Reason Stephen Pearcy Accused Ratt Members Of Hypocrisy

In 2000, Stephen Pearcy left Ratt for the second time because of inner tensions and went on to work on his other projects. In his absence, the band recruited first Robert Mason, then Jizzy Pearl as the lead vocalist, and continued performing under the Ratt banner.

Three years later, Pearcy found himself in a chat about the matter with Rock Confidential. The interviewer asked whether he was bothered because Ratt was performing ‘the songs he made popular’ with someone else. To answer, the singer said:

“I just let things roll over. Life moves on. What I really disrespect is when you involve people personally. Or when you’re a total hypocrite.”

Explaining the reason behind his words, he continued:

“Those guys were saying I never wrote anything, I never wrote the lyrics, I sing like s**t. Those were all my songs on the EP, other than ‘Walking the Dog.’ Well, that’s almost a compliment from my own guys because I’m the one that wrote or co-wrote all the songs that made platinum records! They didn’t write a note. I never thought I’d have a gold record, let alone 15 platinum albums.”

Soon after his departure, Pearcy took to the stage as ‘Ratt Featuring Stephen Pearcy,’ while at the same time, Warren DeMartini and Bobby Blotzer performed under the original band’s name. This led to legal disputes regarding rights to the Ratt brand.

The lawsuit ended in DeMartini and Blotzer’s favor. They and the band’s former vocalist worked on separate projects until 2007 when they came together for a performance at the ‘Rocklahoma’ festival and a reunion tour.

Despite the reunion, tensions in the band carried on. That’s why, while announcing another departure in 2014, the singer explained:

“I am officially done with having anything to do with them due to the constant turmoil, unresolved business, personal attacks/threats in the public forum, and most of all, the disrespect to the fans. I’m very content and proud of the legacy and the music I’ve created. This music will live well beyond any of our lifetimes. I owe no one anything but a huge heartfelt thank you for coming to the party for the last 30 years.”

Still, Stephen Pearcy rejoined Ratt in 2016 and performed with the others until the band went on hiatus last year. Today, it’s unclear if they will reunite for future projects again.
