In 2016, Steven Tyler appeared in one of his latest acting gigs, a film called ‘Happy Birthday,’ and talked about his role in the horror thriller project during an interview with People magazine. Answering questions about his acting career in the chat, he revealed his dream role by saying:
“I would do anything to be in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ – are you listening, James Gunn?”
When Tyler made this statement, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2’ was waiting for its release in theaters. Although there were mentions of a third film in the future, Gunn’s involvement in it was not definite. Still, an answer for the singer’s request came from the director during a Facebook Q&A that year:
“Yes, I did hear that Steven Tyler wants to be in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ He gave me a shout-out the other day in an interview. He said, ‘James Gunn, are you listening?’ The answer is: Steven, yes, I am listening.”
Referring to his collaboration with Tyler’s daughter in a film called ‘Super,’ his words went on:
“And I’m a big fan of Steven Tyler’s. I had the pleasure of directing his daughter Liv [Tyler] in a movie in which she was fantastic, and I met him for a few seconds at a screening of that movie. He’s a cool guy. And, of course, I would love to work with Steven Tyler sometime.”
After the interview, Gunn mentioned the possibility of working with the Aerosmith vocalist if he were to direct the third film on Twitter. Following this, Disney confirmed Gunn’s involvement in the next ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ project only to fire him due to a controversy surrounding his past Twitter posts about pedophilia and molestation.
Although the director returned to the project in 2019, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3,’ which came out in April 2023, didn’t feature Tyler in the cast.
During the filming and release of the film, the singer focused on his work with Aerosmith. After a period of rehabilitation due to his relapse following foot surgery, he announced new live performances with the band, including a farewell tour called ‘Peace Out.’
Currently, the band is set for a show in Florida on October 11, with its tour expected to continue through February 2024 in North America.
