Following the Cure fans’ backlash over the additional fees to ticket prices for the band’s upcoming North American tour, frontman Robert Smith took to Twitter and wrote that he was sickened with the situation as them and was in contact with Ticketmaster. It looks like his effort finally paid off, as the company will partially refund fees to the fans.
Last week, the Cure announced their extensive North American tour and promised that there would be no platinum or dynamically priced tickets. The band also agreed to Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan plan to avoid scalpers. So, the Cure tried to do their best to offer the fans affordable tickets for their upcoming shows.
However, when they went to purchase tickets for the tour, some were faced with the added Ticketmaster charges, including the service fee, facility charge, and order processing fee. They were even higher than the ticket prices themselves. So, fans took to social media to express their disappointment over the issue. Upon seeing their reactions, Robert Smith tweeted, promising fans that he would take care of it.
Apparently, the singer’s riot against Ticketmaster paid off, as he managed to convince the company to offer partial refunds to fans. He shared an update about the situation on Twitter and stated that the audience who had already purchased tickets would receive refunds automatically; going forward, buying tickets would result in lower fees.
The Cure frontman’s initial tweet following the fan backlash against the ticket prices:
“I am as sickened as you all are by today’s Ticketmaster ‘fees’ debacle. To be very clear: The artist has no way to limit them. I have been asking how they are justified. If I get anything coherent by way of an answer, I will let you all know.”
Smith’s update after his contact with Ticketmaster:
“After further conversation, Ticketmaster have agreed with us that many of the fees being charged are unduly high, and as a gesture of goodwill have offered a $10 per ticket refund to all verified fan accounts for the lowest ticket price transactions.
And a $5 per ticket refund to all verified fan accounts for all other ticket price transactions for all Cure shows at all venues. If you already bought a ticket, you will get an automatic refund; all tickets on sale tomorrow will incur lower fees.”
The Cure’s forthcoming tour will kick off on May 10 in New Orleans, and the band is scheduled to perform in cities including Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, San Diego, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Boston, and New York City before wrapping on July 1 in Miami.
