The Black Crowes vocalist Chris Robinson has spoken out about the backlash he received following a controversial moment at the band’s Sunday night show in Tampa, FL. The story was reported by Ultimate Classic Rock. Robinson reportedly responded sarcastically to audience members chanting “U.S.A.” and was subsequently booed by the crowd.
Robinson addressed the incident directly, defending his right to free expression while pushing back against what he described as an overblown reaction.
“One of the [things] this country [was] founded on is being able to say whatever you want. And that’s both sides of whatever you pick,” Robinson said. “I think the whole thing was, of course, blown out of context so people can get clicks and people can stir up the animosity and philosophies or how you feel about life. But be most assured, you know, whatever. It doesn’t matter. In a week, something else will come up that [will stir up] the hornets’ nest.”
Robinson also took care to clarify that his remarks were not intended as a slight against military veterans. He drew a distinction between his personal views and any disrespect toward those who have served.
“No matter what I ever would say or do or feel about things, there’s no way I would disrespect our veterans. I’m a person that I wish we had moved along as a species not to have violence be the way that we resolve conflicts,” he said. “But for the people who’ve put their lives on the line and made that sacrifice and dedication, I wouldn’t do that. I can see that for exactly what it is. Other than that, you know, I have to speak my mind. But I don’t have an agenda or anything, you know what I mean? I’m just trying to make a soulful connection with people and we’ll continue to endeavor to persevere, as they say in the [Clint Eastwood film], The Outlaw Josey Wales.”
The comments come amid continued scrutiny of the Tampa incident, with Robinson showing no signs of stepping back from his position.
The incident unfolded during the band’s May 31 show in Tampa as part of their ongoing Southern Hospitality tour. The details of what sparked the confrontation paint a clearer picture of how quickly the moment escalated.
As Fox News reported, a screen behind the band displayed their crow mascot dressed as Uncle Sam, which prompted a section of the crowd to begin chanting “U.S.A.” Robinson responded from the stage with remarks including “Thanks for the geography lesson” and “I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now,” turning what began as a crowd moment into a charged back-and-forth.
The audience reaction was swift and visible. JamBase noted that Robinson’s comments drew loud boos from the crowd. Some concertgoers walked out before the show had even ended. The confrontation did not remain a brief aside — videos from the show captured Robinson doubling down as the boos grew louder.
Robinson’s response to the booing was captured on video and widely circulated online. MusicRadar reported that Robinson told the crowd, “Some of us have real faith… [and] are not f—ing ignorant,” making clear that he had no intention of walking back his remarks in the moment.
Despite the firestorm, Robinson has since maintained that he is not a politically motivated figure. In a June 3 interview cited by Ultimate Classic Rock, Robinson reiterated that he is “not interested in politics.” His Tampa comments nonetheless drew comparisons to a long pattern of outspoken, socially critical statements he has made over the years. For Robinson, the distinction appears to be between speaking his mind in the moment and carrying a deliberate political agenda — a line he insists he has not crossed.
