Ted Nugent recently criticized Green Day’s selection for a special performance at the 2026 Super Bowl in Santa Clara, California. He made controversial comments about the band in a statement shared on Joe Pags.

The rock musician expressed his disapproval of the NFL’s decision while acknowledging the band’s musical talents.

“Now, Green Day, politically, they’re like brain dead idiots, but they make great music,” Nugent said. “I have to tell you, if you listen to the lyrics, Green Day are some killer musicians.”

Nugent continued his criticism by targeting what he perceives as contradictions in the band’s political stance.

“But I think what is happening this NFL decision to have somebody that is anti-American, anti-constitution, anti-Christian, anti-conservative, anti-work ethic,” he continued. “Even though Green Day has an incredible work ethic, Bruce Springsteen has an incredible work ethic, but they couldn’t be dumber because they’re against the very system by which they became millionaires.”

Nugent’s criticism comes as Green Day prepares for their highly anticipated Super Bowl appearance. This marks a significant moment for the band and the NFL’s entertainment programming.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the rock band, which was formed in a subregion of the San Francisco Bay Area, will perform starting at 3 p.m. Pacific/6 p.m. Eastern to kick off festivities for the Super Bowl’s 60th anniversary. Their performance will precede Bad Bunny’s halftime show, creating a diverse musical lineup for the event.

The selection of Green Day has generated additional controversy given their political history. The Independent noted that Green Day’s addition to the 2026 Super Bowl performance lineup comes months after the NFL faced backlash from Trump and his MAGA base for inviting Puerto Rican artists. The band has been longtime Trump critics who have altered lyrics to skewer MAGA figures like JD Vance.

The timing details for the performance have been confirmed across multiple sources. Merca20 confirmed that their performance is scheduled to begin at approximately 5:00 p.m. Central Time in Mexico, ensuring global audiences can tune in for the pre-game festivities.

The comments reflect ongoing debates about political expression in entertainment and sports venues, particularly as major events like the Super Bowl continue to feature artists with outspoken political views.
