Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones recently shared his perspective on guitar playing philosophy. He expressed his preference for a more straightforward approach over technical virtuosity in comments made to Guitar World.

Jones discussed his own approach to the instrument and his admiration for Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards’ style over more technically proficient players.

“I’ve never really been one to want to practice and get better. I’m quite happy… I don’t know if I can, or if my brain will let me play anything fancy,” Jones said.

He drew a comparison between different guitar playing philosophies. He highlighted his preference for substance over technical complexity.

“It’s like Keith Richards. He’s great at what he does, but it’s limited. That’s fine because I’d be happy with Keith Richards’ limited guitar playing,” Jones continued. “I’d much rather be like him than Yngwie Malmsteen.”

Jones’ admiration for Richards reflects a broader appreciation for the Rolling Stones guitarist’s distinctive approach to the instrument. This approach has influenced countless musicians over the decades.

Get My Guitar reported that Richards is known for his unique style. He often plays with a modified five-string guitar and uses open G tuning, which shapes his distinctive, choppy rhythm and riff-driven sound that helped define The Rolling Stones. This unconventional setup allows Richards to create his signature sound with fewer strings. It proves that technical complexity isn’t always necessary for musical impact.

Richards’ playing philosophy aligns with Jones’ perspective on prioritizing feel over flashy technique. Active Melody noted that his playing draws heavily on blues influences and prioritizes feel and effective rhythm over flashy technique. This approach has made Richards one of rock’s most recognizable guitarists despite his relatively simple playing style.

The Rolling Stones guitarist’s preference for acoustic instruments further demonstrates his commitment to musical authenticity over technical showmanship. Guitar World revealed that Richards himself favors acoustic guitar as his first love. He views electric guitar as more limited and prefers the challenge and expressiveness offered by acoustic playing.

The comments reflect Jones’ long-standing approach to guitar playing. He emphasizes feel and effectiveness over technical prowess, a philosophy that has clearly served both musicians well throughout their influential careers in rock music.
