Star Trek legend William Shatner has announced his upcoming heavy metal album project, as reported on Instagram.
The 94-year-old actor revealed his ambitious musical venture in a statement that outlined his collaboration with numerous metal virtuosos and plans to cover legendary bands.
“Ladies, gentlemen, SWs fans… I have explored space. I have explored time. Now… I explore distortion. Yes. You read that correctly. I am releasing a HEAVY METAL album,” Shatner said.
The project will feature an impressive lineup of musicians and cover classic metal tracks from renowned bands.
“Thirty-five metal virtuosos. Thunderous guitars. Chaos with purpose. Covers of legends like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest — and a few originals forged in the same cosmic fire. This project is, quite literally, a gathering of forces. Loud imagination. Honest intensity. Unapologetic exploration,” he continued.
Despite his advanced age, Shatner emphasized his commitment to pushing creative boundaries.
“At 94, one does not slow down. One turns the volume up,” he said. “So prepare yourselves. We are about to boldly headbang where no one has headbanged before. Stay tuned. The metal voyage begins this year.”
This ambitious project represents a significant departure from Shatner’s recent musical endeavors. It showcases his willingness to explore new creative territories at an advanced age.
Louder Sound reported that the album grew from Shatner’s intro voiceover work on Nuclear Messiah’s upcoming album “Black Flame,” which was created with ex-Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland. This collaboration sparked the idea for Shatner’s own metal venture, demonstrating how creative partnerships can evolve into larger projects.
The inspiration for the album also has a personal touch. Metal Insider revealed that Zakk Wylde gifted Shatner a guitar that helped fuel the recording process. This gesture from the Black Label Society frontman highlights the mutual respect between Shatner and the metal community.
The project will feature an impressive roster of collaborators beyond the previously mentioned musicians. Revolver Magazine confirmed that the album will include contributions from Henry Rollins, Edgar Froese, and Wayne Kramer, bringing together artists from various corners of the rock and metal world.
This isn’t Shatner’s first foray into music. Exclaim noted that his most recent album was 2024’s “Where Will The Animals Sleep? Songs For Kids & Other Living Things.” The stark contrast between a children’s album and heavy metal covers demonstrates Shatner’s diverse artistic interests and his refusal to be confined to any single genre.
The album will feature collaborations with notable musicians including Zakk Wylde and Ritchie Blackmore, with release planned for 2026.
