The band announced the release and shared details about the collaboration and the upcoming album.

“‘IN THE RUINS’ out now on YT and streaming,” Mastodon said. “We collaborated with animation wizards and long-time friends, Hey Beautiful Jerk, for this visual. Marrow Deep lands soon!”

Hey Beautiful Jerk also spoke about the creative process behind the video’s central character, Frank. The studio described how a personal medical emergency and conversations with band members Brann and Troy shaped the concept.

“The initial inspiration for Frank and the concept for ‘In The Ruins’ came to me when I was in the ER for 10 hours with the worst eye infection of my life,” Hey Beautiful Jerk said. “The pain was so bad it felt like my eye was revolting and wanted to escape my head.”

The studio went on to explain how the song’s meaning directly informed the visual concept.

“I had just talked to Brann about the meaning of the song and how it was inspired by his and Troy’s recent losses,” Hey Beautiful Jerk continued. “The expression ‘picking up the pieces’ came to me and I sketched a very rough version of Frank on my phone, capturing the idea as fast as I could before my eye wanted to escape my face once again.”

The release lands as part of a broader rollout for the Atlanta progressive metal band’s long-awaited new record.

“In the Ruins” arrived on August 13, 2026. It marks the third single pulled from “Marrow Deep.” The song follows two previously unveiled tracks, “Your Ghost Again” and “Snakes for Dinner.” Both tracks have already given fans a taste of the album’s direction ahead of its full release.

“Marrow Deep” is set to hit shelves and streaming platforms on August 28, 2026, through Loma Vista Recordings. The album represents Mastodon’s first full-length release since 2021’s “Hushed and Grim.” It marks a highly anticipated return for the band after several years away from new material.

The album is just weeks away, and “In the Ruins” offers listeners another layer of insight into the record’s emotional core. The song’s themes, rooted in loss and the process of rebuilding, are echoed visually through Hey Beautiful Jerk’s animation. This ties the single’s sound and imagery together ahead of the full album drop.

Fans eager for more from “Marrow Deep” won’t have to wait long. The complete tracklist and remaining songs are expected to arrive later this month.
