Sevendust drummer Morgan Rose recently revealed that the band came close to ending their career less than two years ago. He shared details about their near-breakup and subsequent decision to continue in an interview with Stan Bicknell.

Rose explained how the band had initially planned to wind down their career but ultimately chose a different path.

“We were kind of thinking that we were gonna land the plane a little bit, like, ‘Let’s slow it down to a farewell thing,’ which we had discussed, for sure,” Rose said. “And then some other things happened and we decided, ‘You know what? Instead of parking the car here, why don’t we just put it all the way into drive, like all the way in and let’s tour like harder than we’ve ever toured and just burn the car out.'”

The drummer revealed that the band had detailed plans for what they thought would be their final chapter.

“This was gonna be our last record,” he continued. “We had a blueprint for it and everything. We actually had like a whole layout. It was that thick, of going through everything that we were gonna do and how we were gonna do it. And I mean, I cried a few times thinking about it.”

Rose described how quickly their perspective changed from retirement to renewed commitment.

“Overnight, it was a decision that went from ‘We’re gonna retire’ to ‘No, we’re gonna actually put the afterburner on now instead,'” he said.

The band has since committed to touring more extensively than ever before. This marks a dramatic shift from their original farewell plans.

This revelation comes from a band with over three decades of history in the heavy metal scene. AAE Speakers reported that the band was formed in 1994 by bassist Vince Hornsby, drummer Morgan Rose and guitarist John Connolly. After their first demo, lead vocalist Lajon Witherspoon joined the lineup, completing the core group that would define their sound.

The Atlanta-based group has maintained their powerful heavy metal approach throughout their career. Rough Trade noted that the band is known for their powerful sound and intense live performances. These characteristics have kept them relevant in the metal scene for decades.

Rose’s comments about pushing harder than ever align with their recent creative output. Walkers Bluff Casino Resort indicated that with their album Truth Killer, Sevendust proves they’re still taking risks and pushing boundaries. This demonstrates the renewed energy Rose described in his interview.

The band’s commitment to extensive touring is already materializing, with confirmed dates extending into 2026. Their decision to “put the afterburner on” rather than retire appears to be translating into concrete action. This ensures fans will continue to experience their intense live performances for years to come.
