Sammy Hagar recently addressed the possibility of a Van Halen reunion in a comment on Instagram. A fan had asked the legendary rock musician about the chances of the iconic band getting back together.
Hagar expressed his deep desire for a reunion while acknowledging the obstacles preventing it. He explained the current situation regarding the band’s future. He also shared what he and other musicians are doing instead.
“I would love that more than anything in the world, but Eddie is gone and Alex has sold his equipment and is physically unable to play,” Hagar said.
Despite the impossibility of a full Van Halen reunion, Hagar highlighted an alternative way fans can experience the band’s music. He noted that he and other musicians have created a tribute of sorts to keep the Van Halen legacy alive.
“Michael Anthony and I with Kenny Aronoff and Joe Satriani play 14 Van Halen songs in our set,” he continued. “Come see us March Vegas residency or a summer tour about to be announced.”
While a full-scale Van Halen reunion now seems impossible, the story behind the band’s inactivity reveals a more complex history. Sonic Perspectives reported that Eddie Van Halen had actually sought reconciliation with Hagar before his death in 2020. Plans for a Van Halen reunion quietly progressed through what would have been called the “Kitchen Sink tour.” This lineup would have reunited Hagar, Eddie, Alex, and Michael Anthony for what could have been a historic comeback.
The dream of that reunion died with Eddie Van Halen in 2020. The final nail in the coffin came more recently. Alternative Nation revealed that Alex Van Halen sold his full drum kit and gear collection in 2024 following a neck surgery. This surgery left him physically unable to perform. His decision effectively signaled his retirement from playing and made any possibility of a classic Van Halen lineup reunion impossible.
Hagar has remained open to partial reunions in recent years. Metal Wani noted that Hagar has floated the idea of teaming up with Wolfgang Van Halen for a one-night-only residency. Such plans have not materialized into concrete announcements.
Instead of dwelling on what could have been, Hagar has channeled his energy into celebrating Van Halen’s legacy through his “Best of All Worlds” tour and residency. He performs alongside Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Kenny Aronoff. Hagar continues to keep the spirit of Van Halen alive by playing 14 of the band’s classic songs in his set. This ongoing project allows fans to experience the music that defined an era, even if the original band can never reunite.
