Today’s rock music is quite different than what we know of it in the past. It’s safe to say that the definition of the genre has changed a bit, and there are now blurred lines between rock and other music genres. Apparently, Michael Anthony feels the same. In his recent Instagram post, Anthony questioned rock and roll’s current status, while Sammy Hagar said he’s not the only one.

Last year in November, Machine Gun Kelly made the headlines when he announced Grammy granted him a nomination for Best Rock Album. Since he has been the center of criticism for ‘I revived rock music’ claims, the rapper-turned-rocker created a huge controversy for being listed among names like Ozzy Osbourne.

The winners of the 2023 Grammy Awards have recently been announced. In the rock music category,  Brandi Carlie’s ‘Broken Horses’ won Best Rock Performance, Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Degradation Trip’ won Best Metal Performance, and his ‘Patient Number 9’ also brought Ozzy Best Rock Album award.

It seems like Michael Anthony was watching the award ceremony at his home. In his new IG post, the bassist implied the Grammys confused him and made him question if he was too old for this new type of rock music. He then asked what happened to the real rock and roll. Upon seeing this, Sammy Hagar reminded Michael he was not alone in thinking this.

Michael Anthony wrote the following in his Instagram post:

“Trying to watch a little of the Grammys right now. I don’t know if I’m just a bit too old or a little too buzzed from a couple of cocktails. What happened to rock ‘n’ roll? Congrats, Beyoncé.”

Sammy Hagar responded:

“And I thought I was the only one.”

In the comments section of Anthony’s post, many of his followers agreed with him and criticized rock music’s current position. Considering that only Ozzy Osbourne sticks out as a winner who really deserved his spot, they’re not that wrong. Besides, it was probably a sad sight for Anthony and Hagar, past members of the ‘Grammy-winning’ Van Halen.
