Rod Stewart Announces His Decision About ‘Selling His Music Catalog’

In an unexpected twist, Rod Stewart has reportedly walked away from negotiations with Hipgnosis Songs, putting an end to a potential sale of his music catalog. This development was revealed when a spokesperson from his team talked to Billboard. The singer himself also made a public statement explaining his decision.

Stewart, voicing his doubts about the company, stated:

“This catalog represents my life’s work. And it’s [become] abundantly clear after much time and due diligence that this was not the right company to manage my song catalog, career, or legacy.”

Hipgnosis Songs is a well-established company with remarkable partnerships. Its portfolio includes catalogs, publishing rights, and stakes from numerous famous musicians, including Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Justin Timberlake, and Neil Young, among others. So, the recent announcement was surprising.

With that being said, details about the precise nature of the deal remain uncertain. It is not clear whether the musician planned to sell off his entire catalog or if the deal involved only a small part or a royalty stream. Both Hipgnosis and Stewart’s team have remained tight-lipped about the deal, the former citing a non-disclosure agreement as the reason behind their silence.

The unexpected development has sparked some debate in the music industry. There are those who suggest that the public statement was released as a strategic move to increase the value of the catalog, potentially attracting calls from other interested parties. However, there are also industry insiders who believe that a musician of Stewart’s standing wouldn’t need such publicity to lure potential buyers.

The recent statement came just weeks before Rod Stewart’s 2023 international tour. The tour is set to kick off in Ireland on June 20 before heading to North America on July 29.
